Duke Gorlois of Cornwall was the best friend and closest advisor to the slain King Aurelius Ambrosius, and a bitter enemy of King Uther Pendragon since the moment they met while exiled in Brittany.
Personality
Gorlois was a shrewd judge of character, and one who has been involved in a petty rivalry with Uther since they were both practically children. Gorlois was less of a warlord than a steward, and acted as the chancellor for King Aurelius before his death. Since Uther took the throne, Gorlois has been sidelined and pushed away from the throne while still being expected to bring his sizeable armies to battle at Uther's whims, which irritates Gorlois greatly. He has been the most disloyal vassal in Logres for many years, and a confrontation seemed inevitable until Uther and Gorlois agreed to peace with the aid of Merlin in 489.
Important Deeds of Note
In 490, Duke Gorlois and his wife Ygraine escaped from London as Uther sought to keep them prisoners of courtesy. They were assisted by enchantment and sorcery, as a magical snowstorm was created to cover their escape from the city. This caused Uther to declare war on Cornwall.
At the Battle of Terrabil in 491, Gorlois was enraged and led a nighttime assault on Uther's army's campsite. The dishonorable attack was very nearly successful, but in his bloodlust Gorlois attacked and killed Prince Madoc, who used every bit of his dying strength to hold Gorlois's blade in his own body. The Knights of the Sword attacked, slaughtering Gorlois with the aid of Sir Brastias. With the Duke's death, the armies of Cornwall fell into disarray and were defeated.
