History
Name: USS Erebus (NCC-121)
Laid down: 10 May 2144
Launched: 1 March 2145

The USS Erebus, NCC-121, is a 22nd century survey vessel (Neptune Class) operated by Starfleet under the authority of the United Earth Government. Under the authority of Captain Hanale Kaialani, the Erebus is one of the three main ships in Star Trek: Timequake. In service for nearly a full decade, it has recently undergone a very severe refit to prepare it for a mission into deep space, searching for colonization candidates for The New World Project.

Early History

The Neptune class was originally brought into service in the early 2140s, and the Erebus was one of the later ships of that class constructed and launched by Starfleet. The intention of the Neptune class was to be sent on short survey missions to explore the Sol system, and neighboring star systems as well. As it was a later model of the Neptune class, the Erebus was built with more advanced sensory capabilities than its predecessors, making it ideal for scientific survey of anomalies and solar events. Throughout it's early service career, the Neptune explored nearby star systems, and occasion acted in tandem with Vulcan science vessels to gain a better understanding for humanity in the fields of astrophysics and stellar cartography.

Captain Kaialani's Mission

When Captain Kaialani was recalled to Earth to work out the details of The New World Project, he immediately solicited opinions on what type of vessel would work best for the proposed mission. The United Earth Government lacked the resources - especially following the Xindi attack - to support the construction of a new NX-class or larger deep space exploration vehicle. Instead, he supported the plans of Professor Delbeg Toragana, who had developed plans for an ambitious refit of the aging and obsolete Neptune spaceframe.

As part of the Neptune redesign, the engines (which previously had a maximum of Warp 2) with updated models based on the NX-01's Warp 5 engine. Unfortunately, the upgraded engines put a significant strain on the hull, but the sacrifice is worth it as the vessel has significantly upgraded speed and range. The ship is small, and it is necessary for every crewmember to cover multiple roles, without the luxury of dedicated departments as you would find on a larger star cruiser. Along with the engine redesign, the computer systems and weapons have been upgraded as well. As the Erebus is operating in uncharted space, some defensive capabilities were warranted in order to provide the best odds of success.

The Vulcan and Andorian governments both assisted in the planning of the Erebus's mission, and as a result have sent representatives to assist the crew in their tasks. It is rumored that the various governments are using the Erebus as a test case for additional multi-species vessels, in preparation for a formal Federation agreement in the coming years, though at this point that is not public knowledge.
