Tiefling (race)

Tieflings are a planetouched race of humanoids. They have in their lineage some creature from the lower planes, and have taken on several demonic or devilish traits.

The Upside

Racial Bonuses

  • Infravision, can see 60 feet in the dark.
  • Darkness: Tieflings can produce the effects of Darkness as a standard action, as the spell (caster level 1st), once per day.

Talents

  • Must be purchased.

Allowable Classes

Fighter, dark knight, cleric, magic-user, battle mage, thief, assassin.

Allowable Multi-classes

Fighter/thief, magic-user/thief, magic-user/fighter.

Attribute Modifiers

Tieflings gain/suffer the following bonuses/penalties: +1 Dexterity, +1 Intelligence, -2 Charisma.

  • Building Point Bonus: 10.
  • Additional Talents: As Human.
  • Roll on age and all age-related tables as Human.
  • Anything else unmentioned is as Human.

The Downside

  • Many Good-aligned people and races harbor suspicion and distrust for Tieflings. Tieflings suffer up to a -2 initial reaction roll penalty. They may suffer additional penalties depending on how obvious their ancestry is from their appearance.
  • Tieflings MUST roll on the Tiefling Minor Flaw/Unusual Characteristic Table for a flaw. They may roll additional times on the Master Table for additional build points if desired, reroll duplicates or increase severity/double effects on duplicate rolls as sensible.

New Flaws

  • Acute Allergy to Holy Water - Acute allergic reaction to water that has been blessed.
  • Clawed Hands and Feet - The characters limbs end in clawed hands and feet that make wearing normal rings, gloves, shoes, etc, difficult to impossible, or require costly modification at the least. They cannot be used in combat without training.
  • Cloven Hooves for Feet - The character has cloven hooves instead of feet. They cannot wear normal shoes or boots.
  • Fiendish Ears - The character has ears that come to points. They look completely different from Elven ears and anyone who has met any Elves can tell the difference!
  • Hellish Body Odor - As Strange Body Odor from PHB, but varies in intensity and type. The Tiefling with this flaw always has at least a faint scent about them, which can intensify if they are nervous or exerting themselves. For any except "Woodsmoke", the character loses 1 point of Charisma. When active or nervous, the odor is quite noticeable and can potentially give away the character's location or status as a Tiefling (if they were trying to hide it or it is not obvious due to other characteristics).
  • Demonic Eye Color - The character has a discomforting non-human eye color.
  • Excessive Body Heat - The character produces an excessive amount of heat that is noticeable from a short distance. The character must take care with their clothing selection to avoid overheating.
  • Forked Tongue - The character has a forked tongue that is impossible to hide while speaking.
  • Non-Prehensile Tail - The character has a tail, which they can swing back and forth. It cannot be used to pick anything up or attack. You may need to have any pants you acquire tailored.
  • Scaly or Leathery Skin - The character's skin is noticeably calloused, thick, or scaly. No combat benefit is bestowed upon the character.
  • Small Claws Instead of Nails - The character's fingers and toes end in small claws instead of flat nails. The claws are useless in combat.
  • Snake Eyes - The character's pupils are vertically slitted.
  • Unusual Hair Color - Character's hair color is noticeably non-human. Roll on the table to determine color.
  • Unusual Skin Color - Character's skin color is noticeably non-human. Roll on the table to determine color.
  • Vestigial Wings - Batlike wings sprout from the character's back. They cannot be used for flight or gliding. Armor may require costly modification.
  • Visible Horns - Demonic or animal horns grow from the character's skull. Interferes with standard headgear, helmets and hats may require costly modification at the least.
  • Visibly Sharp Teeth - The character has visibly sharp, nonhuman teeth.
