Captain J'Sepp Kalach (Born 2305) is a Starfleet Officer currently serving as the Commanding Officer of the USS Abyssinia, NCC-17239, under the authority of the United Federation of Planets. His crew includes officers such as Commander Liamed Duzan, Unnamed Caitian, Lieutenant Commander Rokul, and Lieutenant Commander Niera Tir.

Early Life

Captain Kalach was born on Arken II, the largest of three moons surrounding the Arkenite homeworld. As the Arkenite are a largely aquatic species, the moon has been terraformed into an oceanic environment. The Arkenite live on large flotillas, made up of many disparate vessels and with complex familial and social structures. J'Sepp's family shipped goods between these various flotillas, acting as a sort of nomadic transportation company. In this lifestyle, Captain Kalach became accustomed to long periods of travel, and learned to absorb the viewpoints and cultures of many of the distinct groups within the larger Arkenite society.

At 30 years of age, Captain Kalach reached adulthood and made the decision to leave his home behind to travel the stars. This was a rare decision for an Arkenite - because they have adapted to life within and atop the sea, they feel discomfort on a starship as they no longer feel the rocking of the waves to which their senses have grown accustomed. To counteract this issue, J'Sepp wears a prosthetic band around his head which helps to simulate the effect for his brain, stabilizing his senses.

Because of his childhood, and the Arkenite philosophy of Sia Lenthar - a sort of bonded group that forms in Arkenite society on the flotillas - Captain Kalach views his crews as extended families in a very unique way. Arkenite culture treats the Sia Lenthar as a sort of large, diverse tribal structure formed out of common need rather than based on politics or partisanry. The more unusual or varied your Sia Lenthar is, the more pride an individual member feels. For this reason, Captain Kalach has pursued a crew which is diverse in thought and nature, but also closely bonded to each other in a way that other Federation vessels envy.

Career

Graduating in 2339, J'sepp Kalach focused on command, security, and science at the academy - in that order. His natural size, standing at over 7'5" tall, made him a natural candidate for security work. His curious nature and unique perspectives led him to focus the most on command, however, and he made Captain very quickly. Within 10 years of leaving the academy, J'Sepp was in charge of his own starship along the border with the Cardassians, serving in the wars against those people in the mid-24th century.

While highly respected in Starfleet, however, J'Sepp Kalach is unlikely to make admiral anytime soon. During the Bluegill parasitic invasion, Captain Kalach was acting as the commanding officer of the USS Polaris. Receiving increasingly unusual orders, Captain Kalach became concerned with the state of Starfleet Command, confiding in his crew that he suspected an unknown force within the bureaucracy acting against the Federation's best interests. This concern was validated when he reached out for clarification and was visited by Admiral Patricks. As he explained his concerns, the Admiral attempted to attach Kalach - surprisingly the 5'8", 70 year old human actually defeated him in hand-to-hand combat. Kalach, though, had set a trap in case of betrayal. An armed security team burst into the room quickly before the Admiral could infect J'Sepp with one of the neural parasites, and they were given all the evidence they needed. Unfortunately, they quickly ascertained how widespread the conspiracy was. In no position to attack Earth itself, and lacking the resources that allowed the Enterprise to infiltrate successfully, Captain Kalach and the crew of the Polaris went rogue.

It took the better part of 18 months for Captain Kalach to rejoin Starfleet, convinced that the parasites might still be controlling key personnel with the organization. Working on his own, Captain Kalach was able to uncover significant information on the plans and identities of the parasites and their captured hosts. Even after the Enterprise destroyed the mother creature inhabiting Dexter Remmick, some traces of the infection still perpetuated within key personnel in the more distant parts of Federation space. Once Captain Kalach had eliminated those threats, he presented himself for court martial and sought leniency for his crew. He had been out of contact for almost two years by this point, but due to the extreme nature of the situation, Captain Kalach was able to maintain his position on a probationary basis, and was transferred to the USS Abyssinia in recent years.

Patrolling the area around Deep Space Nine, the Abyssinia is very near to the new potential battlegrounds with the newly-discovered Dominion. The Klingons, as well, are gearing up for war against the Federation. Beset on all sides, J'Sepp can tell that all is not how it appears, and is intent on rooting out whatever this new infiltration might be. While he has a new crew, he trusts them implicitly, and personally screened every member of his crew for potential security risks - most especially his Security Chief, Lt. Cmdr Tir.
