Dr. Rikk Qosin (Born 2327) is a Starfleet Officer currently serving as the Chief Medical Officer of the USS Guanyin, under the authority of Captain Ramita Nakarmi.

Early Life

Rikk Qosin was born at the Taranko Colony, a frontier Federation colony. His parents were all merchants and traders, dealing in whatever junk they could get their hands on and trying to scrape together some sort of living. His fathers had dreamed that the colony would be a chance to be right at the forefront of a brand new Federation expansion, bringing opportunities that they would not have otherwise. But war with the Cardassians came, and Federation expansion halted, and Taranko remained the edge of nowhere. Rikk loved his parents, but loathed his home. He had no interest in business, but couldn't find any way out of it - he was going to wind up just like his parents unless he did something about it.

One day, however, everything changed. One of his fathers and his primary mother were heading to another system to try and collect supplies for the colony when they found themselves in the aftermath of a Cardassian ambush and brought Rikk along to help. Bodies baking in the hot sun, homes burned to the ground, barely any survivors to be found. They were nowhere near the front, and it wasn't an important strategic target. It was merely pointless violence brought on by a desperate group of soldiers who had been on the run for long enough to turn into little more than pirates.

Rikk was eleven. He didn't speak for a week afterwards, but when he did, he very plainly told his parents that war was pointless, and that he was going to become a doctor because if he couldn't stop people from trying to kill each other, he could at least stop them from succeeding.

Career

Surprising everyone, the aimless and idle Rikk made good on his word. He committed himself to learning as much about medicine as he could - apprenticing with the local healer and pouring through books as quickly as he could find them. When he was old enough, he applied to Starfleet Academy, and scraped by to get passage to Earth. He found Earth to be as enticing as it was overwhelming, but he soon adapted to his life there. He excelled in his studies, and graduated with honors.

His service in Starfleet began with an internship aboard the USS da Vinci, patrolling the Neutral Zone with the Romulans. On his first away mission, he accompanied a team exploring the ancient ruins of a forgotten civilization. While assisting a teammate with a minor sprain, he noticed something in the jungle nearby. Investigating, he found some sort of ancient helmet. He foolishly picked up the object, which suddenly came to life and crawled up his arm, attaching itself to his skull. And so his first away mission nearly got him killed, as he was possessed by an alien soldier. Something about Rikk did not appeal to the ancient technology, however. Whether it was his caustic biochemistry, or his alien brain, or maybe simply his absolute unwillingness to be anything remotely resembling a soldier, the helmet was unable to fully bond with him. As a result, Rikk kept his head enough that he was able to use his knowledge of brain surgery to help an engineer perform a complicated emergency procedure to separate him from the helmet. It was his first taste of action, and he mostly hated it. He still couldn't keep himself being drawn deeper into the world of combat medicine, however.

Rikk's Bolian nature has been called on to assist his crewmates over the years, as well. His upbringing gave him some degree of skill in the art of negotiation and haggling, which allowed him to assist in treaty negotiations with the Oqrel while he was serving aboard the USS Medicine Crow. Rikk was able to use his understanding of galactic politics, and his social skills, to assist in finding common ground in the border dispute and avoided an embarrassing incident for the Federation.

Rikk tried to make marriage work, finding himself a pair of wives and a co-husband who he had met at the Academy, but it ended in tragedy six months ago when his spouses - who served on various Federation vessels - were killed at Wolf 359. Rikk and their teenaged son Hwill were visiting Rikk's parents at Taranko, and are the only survivors of the marriage.
