Session Log

Session One

Played on July 5th, 2017.

During a well-deserved revelry at the White Fox Tavern after the planting season, the party is recruited by Hosokawa Kan, Elder of the town. She explains that a sickness is afflicting many in the region, and that traditional healing arts have not been effective against it. The party is tasked with traveling to a shrine of Suijin in the east, where they will consult with the shrine attendants and seek the Sapphire Sage, an herb known for its mystical healing properties.

The party begins their journey east into the Taiheyo Forest on the next day. After an encounter with some sickly wolves and some slight detours, they find an abandoned house in the forest on the third day of their journey. They plan to make camp here, but first investigate a strange purple light. In the basement, Ryoshi and Ikki find a small bull with a fiery purple glow. It charges them, but after a short skirmish, they find they have cleansed a small toy cow of its evil aura by defeating a spirit of abandonment. Satisfied of its safety, they make camp in the abandoned house.

Session One

Played on July 12th, 2017.

Ryoshi is awoken by her fox companion, and heads outside to find a white fox. The white fox leads her to a particular section of the river to the south, where the remains of an ancient bridge provide some means of crossing the choppy and wide river. She returns to the party and leads them to the bridge ruins, where after some work, and occasional slips, they are able to get themselves and their pack animal across the river. They continue through the forest towards the mountains, with only a minor altercation to slow them down.

Once they arrive at the shine to Suijin, they are greeted by a middle-aged monk with a raspy voice. He seems uncertain if the party can be helped here- Suijin is known for water and purifying water, not healing sickness. However, he consults with the head priest, and after some time, returns to the group, and informs them that they can be helped.

Suijin Hot Springs

He leads them into the shrine, past the gates and a cave of stalactites and stalagmites where the head priest is meditating, into a back area where a hot spring fills the bottom of the cave. Once they are properly attired, they enter the springs and pass through a series of connected caves full of steaming spring water. Eventually they come to a somewhat secluded section, where the water is deeper, with a large red aurochs relaxing in the water. He is Akabeko, spirit of healing. After receiving the toy bull the party had cleansed, he leads them even deeper into the springs, into a large cavern with sunlight shining down into the center. There, they find the Sapphire Sage, which Akabeko explains can indeed treat the sickness afflicting the people of Juichicho-gun. However, it cannot cure them permanently, because it cannot remove the taint upon the land. Akabeko indicates that the taint is coming from a region in the west, and will have to be dealt with at its source. After Ikki harvests as much of the regenerating sage plant as he can carry, he notices the strangeness of the light coming in - Akabeko confirms they are in fact in the spirit realm, and as mortals, cannot stay for long. He leads them out, and along the way collects large chunk of mineral salt from an unused part of the spring. Akabeko tells the party it can be used to treat some farmland, to prevent the sickness from spreading as quickly through the food.

Once Akabeko has guided them back to the front of the springs, the priest then leads them back out of the shrine, and the party returns to Tarama, where they are welcomed as heroes. Perhaps soon they will journey to the west to uncover the source of the taint?
